Cacophony
I only consider myself successful when I do something that resembles the lack of order I sense - Robert Rauschenberg
At the height of the pandemic an overwhelming roar pervaded my consciousness; fuelled by the deluge of contemporary media and demands of late stage capitalism. This mental state led me to create the series Cacophony, an attempt to visually express this sensed societal and inner dissonance.
In Cacophony I play with acrylic sand mediums, accreting layer after layer of disorder. Organic forms emerge (reminiscent of vines, organs, or coral) and artificial fluorescent colours dominate. The resulting pieces are unsettling and overpowering, yet simultaneously intriguing and beautiful.
Ecological systems seek to find equilibrium, to sustain and nourish all organisms within, or they self-destruct. In contrast humans live in a discordant industrialized state. I intuitively represent this dichotomy with imagery that evokes nature but is uncannily artificial and overwhelming. A cacophonous modern existence juxtaposing the wisdom of harmonious nature.
